i have the same problem,. after 25 years i wish i could find a way to get my head around it. these godaman doctors removing the toenails of children who have nbo idea how it might make them feel in adult life. from a podiatrists point of view - most seem to say this practise is barbaric. unless the nail is seriousy ingrown on both sides - a full removal - never to grow back - is considered an uneccessary mutilation. most podiatrist would remove a small sliver of nail permanently on the ingrown side leaving you with a slightly less wide nail. i never stop feeling angry about not getting proper treatment..and this brutal method of whole, premanent removal.

a new treatment is emerging though... a few podiatrists in the states, uk and portugal are using dental bonding and composite materials(the ones used on yout teeth by the dentist) to adhere and sculpt a new toenail to your nail bed. it uses nano-adhearane. the same molecular way a filling fixes to your tooth to keep it stuck to the nail bed. even if you hsve no toenail whatsoever. for the majority of people it seems to work very well. for me, i was unlucky, it came of straight away - it depends on how much scar tissue is left on yout toe.

try searchin podiatry - missing toenail composite bond... andre ferria in portugal - and there s a practise in kent, uk that also does it.

for me i feel that the practise of using dental bondig agent is a good step forward to fixing something long-term to your toe - but not perfect. it seems to me that the further sculpting of a resin nail on top of this bonding agent produces something a little too bulky and stiff to stay on long-term.

ive had to resort to diy methods

ive manged to produce realistic enough looking nails - using a few layers of opaque sticking tape (the type that is almost transparent and matte in surface) and putting a thin even layer of matte eyeshadow between the top two layers to give it the corrent pinky creamy colour. Eyeshadow is brilaint because it comes in a billion different colours and there is definately one shade out there that can be matched to the colour of your nails.... this produces an incredibly thin (the same thiness as a nail) light and flexible nail like material that can then can be cut to size and adhered to he toe using composite bonding agent - purchaceable cheaply from ebay - about 17pounds -its called fusion bonding agent.

all this costs nothing. but youll need a light curing device to harden the fusion bond... about 50 pounds - also easily avaialable from ebay - a few drops of bond is all thats needed. this actually is all very simple and easy.

i ahd a nail that stayed on for three monrhs... did it again, and now four and still going strong. its the best thing ive found so far.

im going to make a fact sheet - stooboogaloo@yahoo.co.uk - also with names and adresses of podiatrists who do are using this new technique if you dont want to go the DIY route

also i ahve afeeling his is going to become alot more widespread in podaitry and prhaps the techniques will be refined further, who know something better may be along soon.

in solidarity with the toenailess

Interesting question as I have the same problem. And I too have tried to think of ways to alter the appearance of missing toenails (s) for me.
all in all the answer is no. i remember quite well the doc. asking one last time, "are you sure you wanna go ahead and remove it permanently?".
I said yes..cuz I couldn't stand the pain of it anymore.
well, here I am today, like you.
No people don't go around looking at our toes, but believe me, I have had many pp notice!!
unfortunately, we are just screwed on this. I have actually put a thin coat of polish on the skin before,.
But I find if I don't paint my toes, there is less attention brought to them
so sorry..i know what u are going thru

not a good idea, the glue required to adhere the nail to the skin would cause serious skin breakdown after a very short time. If you are so self conscious about your toes, everyone else will be too, if you don't pay attention to it, neither will anyone else. Seriously, do you go around looking at other people's feet? Others don't go around checking out feet either, unless you draw attention to it, no one will likely notice it at all.
